OUR IMAGE OF JAPANESE THEATRE BETWEEN 1844 AND 1900
Petra Doma
Although the Hungarian audience could read about Japanese theatre for the first
time in 1844, it was not before 1868 that it could see a Japanese troup on stage.
This essay examines what possibilities the people living in the territory of Hun¬
gary had at their disposal to learn about the traditional Japanese theatre between
1844 and 1900. I explored the image Hungarians had about Japanese theatre at
the end of the 19th century. Based on the first Japanese theatrical troup’s visit
in Hungary I will provide a textual analysis of written sources and a comparative
examination of their performances. As I will argue, there is a serious contrast
between contemporary reviews about the performances of these first troups and
the essays and articles on traditional Japanese theatre published during the same
decades. Despite having the opportunity to read about authentic Japanese theatre
already in the second half of the 19th century, the Hungarian audience could
clearly not experience it until 1900. They could only enjoy the performances of
acrobat companies which primarily offered ethnic curiosities.
ADDITIONS TO THE BORDER PROTECTION ROLE
OF THE RED GUARD IN THE AREA OF THE SOMOGY COUNTY DIRECTORATE
The area of Somogy, which is under the jurisdiction of the Somogy County Di¬
rectorate, and partially Baranya, in terms of defense tasks, was first protected
by the troops of the 44th Somogy-Baranya Red Brigade of the demarcation line
from possible Serbian attacks. The Red Guard took over the defense of the de¬
marcation line with the departure of the Red Army units for the northern cam¬
paign against the Czechoslovak troops. It can be concluded that in the area of
the Somogy County Directorate, the Red Guard of Somogy, reinforced with units
from Tolna County. The Red Guard has been assigned a large number of tasks,
the frequent staffing and significant logistical problems, and primarily the con¬
flicts with the Red Army, disciplinary issues and those living along the demar¬
cation line due to the constant conflictual relationship with the local population,
the effective implementation of its border protection tasks certainly exceeded
the capabilities of the law enforcement organization. It is an edited variant of a
conference lecture.
