- Az Oszmán Birodalomban élő örmények történelmének kutatását hosszú időn keresztül az első világháború idején történt genocídium határozta meg. Elke Hartmann jelen kötetében az ezt megelőző korszakba kalauzolja el az olvasót. Esettanulmányok sorozata világítja meg a historiográfia előfeltételeit, majd tágabb összefüggésekbe helyezi a 19. századi oszmán modernizációs törekvéseket és az akkori oszmán közigazgatási gyakorlatot. A szerző bemutatja az örmény vezető szereplőket és képviselőket, ezek politikai és társadalmi döntési mozgásterét és lehetőségeit. Bemutatja egy egyszerű falusi lány sorsán keresztül a regionális, birodalmi, birodalmak közötti transzimperiális és globális kivetüléseket, kitér az örmény identitás alakulásának kérdéseire és végül családi képeken keresztül foglalkozik az Oszmán Birodalomban élő örmények társadalomtörténetével. - For a long time, research of the history of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire was dominated by the scholary research of the Armenian genocide. In this volume, Elke Hartmann takes the reader back to the period before that. The volume introduce the premise of historiography, the Ottoman modernization efforts of the 19th century and Ottoman administrative practices of the time in a broader context. The author introduces the leading Armenian actors and representatives, their political and social choices and their scope for political and social decision making. Through the fate of a simple village girl, the author illustrates the trans-regional, trans-imperial, trans-imperial and global projections, through family portraits, deals with the social history of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. Elke Hartmann's book provides a complete overview for those interested in the life of the Armenian community in the Ottoman Empire and, through them, a deeper understanding of Ottoman history in 19th century Anatolia.
