- Titus Livius 142 könyvből álló történeti művében Róma alapításától egészen saját koráig, a császárkor elejéig írta meg a Római Birodalom történetét. Akár a többi ókori történeti mű, ez is a szépirodalom körébe tartozik, és jóllehet fontos hagyományokat dolgoz fel a maga szempontjai szerint, valójában többet mond el saját koráról, az Augustus-korról, mint a régmúlt időkről. A monumentális műből már az ókorban kivonatok, összegzések készültek. Részben ez az oka annak, hogy mi már csak az I-X. és XXI-XLV. könyveket olvashatjuk teljes formájukban. Ezeket, az elveszett könyvek kivonataival és töredékeivel kiegészítve, Kis Ferencné és Muraközy Gyula fordításának átdolgozott, nyelvileg és stilisztikailag felfrissített változatában veheti most kézbe az érdeklődő olvasó, kibővített és modernizált jegyzetapparátussal.

- Titus Livius, also known as Livy, wrote a monumental history of Rome from the foundation of the city until his own age, the early Empire, in no less than 142 books. His work, just like ancient historic works in general, belongs to literature rather than history, and although it reshapes important traditions from the author's own point of view, many times it tells the tale of its own age, the Augustan era, rather than stories of the past. Excerpts and summaries of the giant work already appeared in late antiquity. This is one of the reasons why only Books I-X and XXI-XLV made it to modern times in their entirety. The surviving books, supplemented with the excerpts and fragments of the lost books, hitherto available in the Hungarian translation of Ferencné Kis and Gyula Muraközy, received an overhaul in terms of language and style as well as enhanced and updated explanatory notes.
