LITERARY CODE-SWITCHING reflecting not only the desire and necessity of preserving and revitalizing a threatened language, but also to enter a relationship with the reader—a relationship that often takes the form of teacher and learner, emphasizing her work as poetry—as—language-—lesson. Mcllwraith’s positioning of néhiyawéwin front and center—the Cree language being the main theme as well as the most important vehicle available for her reflections—and in relation with English demonstrates the effects of settler colonialism on the Cree language but also, even more importantly, succeeds in challenging and countering them.
