SHAKESPEARE’S ART OF POESY IN KING LEAR

2°0 Guillaume La Perriére: Theatre des bons engins, Paris, Denis Janot, n.d. (1544), http://www.
emblems.arts.gla.ac.uk/french/books, (accessed 1 March 2009).
The English transcription of the text of the emblem is the following: The flatterers of the court
hold their tongues in their hands / and they offer their service to anyone who comes / until
they inhumanly / satisfy their insatiable hearts. / To demonstrate that they are amiable, /
they are very cunning with little emotion. / It marvels when the heart counterfeits / but oh,

many people recoil: / since due to the tainted intention / they have their tongue in the front
and their heart behind.
