Wäre dieß /so/nicht der höchste Grad der Aufklärung auf der Erde: wie würde die Erwartung einer höheren Glükseeligkeit /so/ im Himmel (...) begreiflich werden?” The theory of “needs,” thatinspired a genuine optimism based on human progress in the Göttingen theoreticians of the discipline, stood also at the basis of the adaptations of the sciences of state in Hungary. Gergely Berzeviczy’s Ungarns Industrie und Kommerz identifies for instance commerce and industry as the source of “political weight in the European political system:””° “Luxus ist in erhöhtes Genuß alles dessen, was Natur, Industrie, Künste und Wissenschaften erzeugen: er ist also eine Aufmunterung des Fleises, er ist wohltätig, wenn er auf den Verbrauch einheimischer Erzeugnisse Gerichtet ist, und aus dem Zuwachs des inneren Wohlstandes überströmt: so ist er ein wirksames Beförderungs-Mittel des Commerzes und der Industrie”? The figure of the ruler as a caring and prudent pater familias had been another central notion of cameralist literature, which since its beginning in the late seventeenth century equated the political interests of the absolutist ruler with the economic well-being of the population. By the mid-eighteenth century this personal figure was gradually replaced by a more abstract and functional (administrative) notion of government. This was the case also in the writings of the Gottinger professor Achenwall, who emphasized the practical importance of the discipline in outlining the principles of “wise governance,” that he linked to “internal” and “external” “interests” of a state.
