ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

—o> —

It is a pleasure to reach the point where I can express my gratitude to the
numerous individuals and organizations that have contributed to this dis¬
sertation.

First of all, I would like to express my deep gratitude to Ägnes Bolonyai.
Ägnes has been a great inspiration for me for her determined and humble at¬
titude to her profession. I could never thank her enough for what I have learned
from her as a researcher and as a mentor.

I would also like to thank my supervisor, Anna Fenyvesi, for her insightful
comments and constructive criticism. She has taught me crucial ways to ana¬
lyze issues investigating interactions between language and society.

I am also grateful for the Hungarian Fulbright Commisission for grant¬
ing me a great opportunity to spend an academic year in the USA as a post¬
graduate researcher.

I would also like to express my gratitude to the subjects of my research for
sharing with me the most personal accounts of their lives spent in immigra¬
tion.
