- A kötet a képi fordulat különféle művészeti ágakban és a tudományban is megfigyelhető jelenségével, valamint a fogalmi metafora elméleti keretével kívánja bevezetni és összefogni két nagy témáját: a francia költészet és a színház reprezentációhoz fűződő, szerteágazó kérdésfeltevéseit. A könyv első fejezeteiben két olyan kortárs francia költészeti irányzatot taglalunk, melynek viszonya a képhez különböző módon, de meghatározó (Yves Bonnefoy és Lorand Gaspar, valamint Jean-Michel Maulpoix). A kötet második felében néhány olyan színházi gyakorlatot választottunk ki, amelyek az emberi képmás, az emberi "bálvány" lerombolására és újbóli összerakására tesznek kísérletet (Grotowski, Kantor, Barba, Novarina), s ebben a folyamatban a költészet eszközeit is használják. Ezeknek a színházi gyakorlatoknak, melyek közül Valére Novarina életművét emeljük ki, közös nevezője, hogy nemcsak a dramaturgiájukban ismétlik az önmegüresítés folyamatát, hanem a színészvezetésben is alapvető helyet adnak neki. A második rész tehát, nem tagadva a színházi gyakorlatok egyéb inspirációs forrásait, a Novarina életműve szempontjából központi jelentőségűnek tekinthető teológiai kenózis-fogalom színházi, színháztudományi alkalmazására tesz kísérletet, s ebben különösen támaszkodik H. U. von Balthasar teológiai esztétikájára, Xavier Tilliette munkáira, Simone Weil színház- és kenózis-koncepciójára, továbbá Kálvin, Karl Barth, Paul Tillich és Kazoh Kitamori műveire. A tárgyalt alkotók vonatkozásában elsőnek tekinthető magyar nyelvű monográfia mellékletében közölt, Túl a szakrálison című Valére Novarina-esszé magyar fordításban most jelenik meg először.

- The volume intends to use the phenomenon of the pictorial turn observable in various branches of art and in science, as well as the theoretical framework of the conceptual metaphor for providing an introduction and establishing an integrative context for the divergent questions of its two major topics: French poetry and theatre. The first chapters of the book discuss two trends in contemporary French poetry that have a determinative relation to poetic images, though in different ways (Yves Bonnefoy and Lorand Gaspar, as well as Jean-Michel Maulpoix). In the second part of the book we chose to show theatre practices that make attempts at destroying then reassembling the human portray, the human ‘idol’ and in this process they turn to the means of poetry as well (Grotowski, Kantor, Barba, Novarina). The ‘common denominator’ of these theatre practices – of which VN’s oeuvre is paid a special attention to – is that they not only re-play the process of self-emptying in their dramaturgies but also give it an important role in the instructions for the actors. Thus, the second part – while not denying the other inspirational sources of theatre practices – makes an attempt at a theatre or theatre studies application of the theological concept of kenosis, which can be considered to be of central significance in Novarina’s oeuvre. In doing so it especially relies on H. U. von Balthasar’s aesthetics of theology, Xavier Tilliette’s works, Simone Weil’s concepts of theatre and kenosis, as well as the works by Calvin, Karl Barth, Paul Tillich and Kazoh Kitamori. As a supplement to this monograph, which can be considered the first to discuss the artists included in Hungarian, there appears Valère Novarina’s essay “Beyond sacrality” in Hungarian translation for the first time.
