- Szelényi Gusztáv (1904–1982) kiemelkedő magyar ökológus, agrárentomológus, a hártyásszárnyúak (Hymenpotera: Chalcidoidea, Proctotrupoidea) taxonómiájának nemzetközileg ismert specialistája volt. Jelen kötetben 1956-ban elkészült, mindezidáig csak magyarul hozzáférhető munkáját adjuk közre angol nyelven. Ebben Szelényi az állatközösségek (zoocönózisok) korabeli elméleteire reflektálva kidolgoz egy egyedi zoocönológiai modellt. Funkcionális kapcsolatokra fókuszáló zoocönológiai elképzeléseinek bemutatása során vitázik a magyar zoológia másik nagy alakjával, Balogh Jánossal (1913–2002), akinek zoocönológiai megközelítése szerint az állattársulások térben elkülönülnek és szorosan kötődnek az növénytársulásokhoz (fitocönózis). Fogalmi modelljének kidolgozása során Szelényi összeveti elméletét, az abban használt fogalmakat Charles Elton, Orlando Park, Herbert Franz, Karl Friederichs, Wilhelm Kühnelt, Wolfgang Schwenke, Wolfgang Tischler és további kortárs ökológusok zoocönológiai modelljeivel. Szelényi munkája jól reprezentálja a 20. század elején-közepén dolgozó közösségi ökológusok azon erőfeszítéseit, hogy olyan fogalmi konstrukciókat hozzanak létre, melyek alkalmasak arra, hogy leírják az állategyüttesek szerkezetét és predikálják annak változásait. A kötetet ökológusoknak, entomológusoknak, az ökológia története és a tudományfilozófia iránt érdeklődőknek ajánljuk.

- Gusztáv Szelényi (1904–1982) was an eminent Hungarian ecologist and agricultural entomologist, who gained international recognition for his contribution to the taxonomy of Hymenoptera (Chalcidoidea, Proctotrupoidea). In this volume, his work, completed in 1956, and hitherto only available in Hungarian, is first published in English. Here Szelényi, reflecting on contemporary theories of animal communities (zoocoenoses), develops his own zoocoenological concept focusing on functional relationships. In doing this, he contests with another great figure in Hungarian zoology, János Balogh (1913–2002), who held that animal communities were spatially distinct and closely connected to plant communities (phytocoenoses). In the formulation of his zoocoenological model, Szelényi carefully distinguishes his concept and terms from those of Charles Elton, Orlando Park, Herbert Franz, Karl Friederichs, Wilhelm Kühnelt, Wolfgang Schwenke, Wolfgang Tischler, and other contemporary ecologists. Szelényi's model is a good example of the efforts of community ecologists working in the early to mid-20th century to develop conceptual frameworks that describe the structure of animal communities and predict their changes. This book is recommended for ecologists, entomologists and those interested in the history of ecology and the philosophy of science.
