Environmental Humanities is the product of the 21st century, an age in which it is no longer possible to grasp and manage environmental problems from a single viewpoint. This is why traditional humanities subjects such as philosophy, aesthetics, literary and religious studies, history, and linguistics have combined the natural and social sciences and the arts into an interdisciplinary formation to understand contemporary environmental issues. The book in the Reader’s hands is intended to become part of the body of literature – introductions, chrestomathies – about Environmental Humanities, adapted to the Hungarian context. Due to its nature, it provides a comprehensive description of a topic, such as environmental philosophy, environmental anthropology, nature art, nature conservation, the relationship between religion and ecology, environmental history, legal, political, and economic issues, social justice, overpopulation, or food dilemmas. In addition, the volume shows the community responses to contemporary ecological and social problems with examples from Hungary.

In an era where the ubiquity of the English language intersects seamlessly with global entertainment, today’s youth naturally absorb the language while engaging in leisure activities. Delving beyond conventional pedagogical boundaries, this book illuminates how extramural activities, from cinematic experiences to digital gaming, can be exploited as resources for learning English. Employing a rigorous empirical framework, the present research project uncovers evidence that learners who engage in extramural English activities demonstrate higher English learning motivation, reduced English speaking anxiety, and enhanced willingness to communicate in English. Written for language professionals and researchers, this synthesis of empirical results aims to enrich the discourse on English as a Foreign Language learning and teaching. By unravelling the relationship between leisure, motivation, and individual learner differences in general, this book aims to provide readers with important research findings relevant in current foreign language education.

Valerian Mader (1558–1605?) könyvének nemcsak az adja a különlegességét, hogy egyetlen fennmaradt példányt ismerünk belőle, hanem az a személyes és lírai hangvétel is, amely a korszak neolatin költeményeiből általában hiányzik. Olvashatunk szerelmi jó tanácsokról és szerelmi kínokról, barátja betegségére ajánlott szilvaleves receptről, gyerekkorának félelmetes farsangi élményéről, kilencévesen egy eltévedt muskétagolyótól szerzett traumatikus sebesüléséről, a sárospataki hidegben egy ajándékba kapott köpenyről, elfogyott írópapírokról, egy tankönyveit házába befogadó lelkészről, egy tavaszi kora reggelről a Vág partján, egy kisgyermeknek ajándékba küldött körtékről, a Tycho Brahe-féle 1577- es üstökösről, pestisről és unitárius lelki pestisről, a zsolnai iskola felgyújtásáról, a török kegyetlenségeiről, gyermekei haláláról, a mezőn egy fiókáit védeni próbáló lekaszált madárról, sőt erdélyi rablókról, akiktől zenei tudásának hála megmenekült. Jelen kiadásunk és összefoglaló tanulmányunk tisztelgés a magyar irodalomtörténet ezen méltatlanul elfeledett költője előtt.

The special value of Valerian Mader's (1558–1605?) book is not only due to the fact that only a single surviving copy is known, but also because of the personal and lyrical tone that is generally absent from the Neo-Latin poetry of the period. We can read about love advice and the pains of love, a plum soup recipe recommended for a friend's illness, a terrifying childhood carnival experience, the traumatic injury from a stray musket ball at the age of nine, a gifted cloak in the cold of Sárospatak, the lack of writing paper, a pastor who sheltered his textbooks, an early spring morning on the banks of the Váh River, pears sent as a gift to a small child, Tycho Brahe’s 1577 comet, the plague and the "spiritual plague" of Unitarianism, the burning of the school in Žilina, Turkish cruelties, the death of his children, a bird cut down in the field trying to protect its nestlings, and even Transylvanian robbers, from whom he escaped thanks to his musical knowledge. This edition and the accompanying study pay tribute to this unjustly forgotten poet of Hungarian literary history.

A borítón látható Occasio istennő a kérészéletű alkalmi költészet szimbóluma. A költő, ha elszalasztja megragadni lobogó üstökét, kopasz tarkója után már hiába kapkod. E kötet a kora újkor legjellemzőbb irodalmi műfajának elméleti kérdésein keresztül vizsgálja a sárospataki rektor, Filefalvi Filiczki János költői életművét. Nemcsak tekintélyes méretű, saját szerkesztésében megjelent verseskötete maradt ránk, hanem koszorús költővé is avatták Bázelben. Monográfiánk nem titkolt célja, hogy elfeledett költőnknek kijelölje az őt megillető méltó helyet a magyar irodalomtörténetben.

The goddess Occasio on the cover of the book is a symbol of the occasional poetry. If the poet fails to grab her flying hair, he will snatch at the back of his bald head in vain. Through theoretical questions of the most typical literary genre of the early modern period, this volume examines the poetic oeuvre of János Filiczki of Filefalva (ca. 1583-1622). The aim of the monograph is to give our forgotten poet his rightful place in the history of Hungarian literature.

A teológia – akár mint Isten beszéde, akár mint Istenről szóló beszéd – párbeszédre késztet, s nem végső ismeretek felhalmozása a célja. A valódi párbeszéd pedig olyan tanulás, amely egészen mélyen érintheti a benne részt vevőket, akár komoly változásokat indítva bennük. Az Evangélikus Hittudományi Egyetem 2024. évi tanulmánykötetének oktató és doktoranduszhallgató szerzői komplexen ragadták meg a teológia és a tanulás viszonyrendszerét. A két terület kapcsolódásának olyan árnyalatait érintik, amelyek megfejtéséhez az is szükséges, hogy az olvasók nyitottan legyenek jelen, azzal a várakozással, hogy önmagukat, a másik embert, a világot és Istennel megélt kapcsolatukat is tanulják közben. Azt is, ami a szemük előtt van, ami megtapasztalható és vizsgálható, de azt is, amit még nem látunk, sőt amiről még nem is tudjuk, hogy nem látjuk. A teológiát és a tanulást ez a sajátosság: a – felfedezésre váró – rejtettség is összeköti. Nem minden téma adja könnyen magát. Mindig marad valamennyi titok egy-egy tanulmányban, amelyek megfejtése lehet, hogy nehéz feladat, de felkeltheti az olvasóban a témákhoz való közelebb kerülés vágyát, igényét, s további keresésre, gondolkodásra és beszélgetésekre – vagyis tanulásra – késztethet. A cél talán nem is a végső tudás megszerzése, mint inkább rezonálni arra, amit tapasztalunk, inspirálódni, szempontokat, kiindulópontokat fedezni fel további kapcsolódásokhoz, vagyis folyamatosan fenntartani a valódi párbeszédet. Korántsem csak a professzionálisan teológiával foglalkozó olvasókhoz szól a kötet, hanem a párbeszédben való aktív részvételre hívja a téma iránt érdeklődő minden olvasót.

Geostrategy is an integral part of geopolitics, the geographical projection of a state's international interests, which determines strategic programs and activities in relation to specific geographical areas, primarily on the basis of security, political and economic considerations. The basic assumption of this volume is that the resolution of the Cyprus conflict, which has been unresolved for over six decades, is not only constrained by the conflicting interests of local communities, but also by the geostrategic interests of regional and great powers. These Greek, Turkish, British, American and to some extent Russian strategic concepts have deepened the conflict on the island, precluded any international legal solution and, as a de facto outcome, have allowed direct or indirect presence on the island for most of the involved external actors. This volume seeks to identify the strategic factors that attracted foreign powers to the island, to explore their foreign policy concepts and actions to control these strategic factors, and to understand how their interventions influenced the emergence and continuation of the conflict.

A könyv célja érzékeltetni természet és társadalom fenntartható működéséről alkotott képünk alapjait, kidolgozottságát, megvalósíthatóságát. Az utóbbi fél évszázadban egymást követték azok a tudományos felismerések, innovatív ötletek, a megértést segítő új koncepciók és mérőszámok, illetve az új gazdasági-társadalmi rendszer alapjait lefektető elvek és gyakorlatok, amelyek segítségével felépíthető, megtervezhető egy település vagy ország fenntartható jövőjének, fenntartható működésének képe, mikéntje. Könyvünk az elvi alapok közül H. Daly nyomán a folytonos növekedés kritikáját adja, bevezet a természet értékelésébe, elmagyarázza a bolygóhatárok fogalmát, összefoglalja a fenntarthatóság keresztény etikai alapjait, és kitekint a meglévő jogi eszköztárra. Technikai példákként a nagyiparban látható fordulatokat sorol, bemutatja a permakultúrás mezőgazdaságot, a tájban való vízmegtartást, az ipari ökológia elvét, és a vegyipar „zöld” lehetőségeit.

The book aims to prove that our vision of a sustainable economy has been already for some time well-founded, detailed, feasible, and there for the taking. The past half century brought a series of innovative insights, discoveries and inventions, new concepts and indicators, new principles and practices that can assist the planning of the stable and sustainable operation of any settlement or country. The book summarizes examples like the steady-state economics of H. Daly, the valuing of, and accounting for, ecological services, or the notion of Planetary Boundaries. It offers an introduction into Christian ethical teaching about sustainability, and an overview of legal instruments in the service thereof. As for examples of technology and process, it presents the environmental pledges of big business, the practice of permaculture, ecological water retention in the landscape, the principle of industrial ecology, and some advances of a “green” chemical industry.

A teremtett világ védelme az egyház megközelítésében túlmutat a puszta praktikus kérdéseken. Ferenc pápa a Laudato si’ kezdetű enciklikában arra figyelmeztet, hogy a „mai helyzet gyökeréig” kell hatolni. Nem elég csak „a tüneteket” észlelni és azok kezelésére javaslatot tenni. Ez a kötet mélyfúrásokra tesz kísérletet az etika, a bölcselet, a vallástudomány és a jog találkozási területein. Ha nem is fedi le mindet, ráirányítja a figyelmet a kérdés összetettségére és a hosszú távú kutatások jelentőségére.

The protection of the created world, from the Church's perspective, goes beyond mere practical concerns. In his encyclical Laudato si’, Pope Francis emphasizes the need to address the root causes of the current ecological crisis, not just its symptoms. He calls for a deep, holistic approach that examines the underlying ethical, philosophical, theological, and legal issues. This book attempts to explore these intersections, highlighting the complexity of the issue and the importance of long-term research​.

In 2022, the question "what is the need for a library?" is becoming increasingly frequent. Many of those who believe that humanity is developing are particularly confused by the kilometers of books that have been accumulated. Not knowing that the digital library is also a library, and not knowing that we still have a long way to go before the written heritage of humanity becomes part of the numerical world. Even then, humanity will not develop, but, suffice it to say that technology does. If we look at the library of the Hungarian King Matthias Hunyadi (1443-1490), the Bibliotheca Corvina, we can follow its history along similar lines. Why and how the collection was created, which in the opinion of the political leaders of the Hungarian Kingdom—not necessarily more cultured than nowadays—was meant to be "pro decore Regni", i.e. "for the pride of the country". The arrival of Beatrix of Aragon (1457-1508) and her entourage to Buda (1476) accelerated the book collection process. In Europe between 1470 and 1520 Western Christianity existed in a shared world of values. Within the Christian Church, as a monk named Martin Luther (1473-1546) did, the texts of the early church fathers and of the saints of personal religiosity were published, analysed and interpreted, while secular humanists did the same with the ancient corpus of texts and the textual memories that have been preserved from the early church fathers. Furthermore, they collected sources with people like Cosimo de Medici il Vecchio (1389-1464), who had the Bibliotheca Graeca and Bibliotheca Latina chambers set up in the convent of San Marco in Florence, and with people like Matthias Corvinus, who did the same in Buda.

On peut avoir l’impression que les acteurs aujourd’hui actifs dans la sphère politique apprécient les connaissances ’utiles’, mais l’historicité de ces connaissances n’a pas forcément de place dans leur conception de l’utilité. Or nous avons la conviction que l’étude de la culture viti-vinicole d’avant la crise du phylloxéra du tournant des 19e-20e siècles, de l’histoire matérielle et technique de la production des vins ainsi que des phénomènes sociaux y liés fourniront des résultats qui pourront intéresser un large public. En France, chacune des régions vinicoles a son propre groupe de recherches travaillant sur son histoire. Le groupe de recherche Speculum, actif au sein de l’Université Tokaj-Hegyalja à Sárospatak, le Centre d’Études des Mondes Moderne et Contemporain de l’Université de Bordeaux-Montaigne ainsi que l’Institut d’Histoire du Centre de recherches en sciences humaines à Budapest ont organisé, en novembre 2002, un colloque scientifique, consacré à la comparaison de l’héritage culturel des deux régions connus surtout pour leurs vins doux et liquoreux. Les matériaux de ce colloque sont réunis dans le volume que nous publions.

In November 2022, the Speculum Research Group (active at the Tokaj University in Sárospatak, Hungary), the Centre d’Études des Mondes Moderne et Contemporain (Université de Bordeaux-Montaigne) and the Institute of History of the Research Centre for the Humanities (Budapest) has organised an academic symposium dedicated to the comparison of the cultural heritage of two regions principally known of their sweet and liqueur wines, the Tokaj and Sauternes regions. The papers of this symposium are collected in this volume.

Csíksomlyó közismert katolikus Mária-kegyhely Romániában a Székelyföldön, ahová nemzedékek óta kitartóan és nagy számban zarándokolnak az emberek. A hagyományos búcsújárás a diktatúra után 1990-től lényeges változásokon ment keresztül: vonzásköre kiterjedt, százezres tömegek keresik fel, mára médiaesemény és a vallási turizmus egyik célpontja lett. Hivatalos egyházi elismertetés nélkül is nemzeti kegyhelynek számít. A könyv a fogalmi bevezetőt követő második részben röviden összefoglalja a kegyhely életének első évszázadait. A harmadik részben a negyven évet átívelő diktatúra a téma. A negyedik és ötödik rész tíz fejezetben tárgyalja az 1990 után feléledő búcsújárást és a kegyhely változásait a vezetőktől a tárgyakig, a térszerkezettől a médiáig. Az összefoglaló fejezetet forrásszövegekből összeállított mellékletek, személynév- és földrajzinév-mutatók követik. A szöveget 267 jól adatolt, többnyire színes fénykép illusztrálja, amiknek túlnyomó többségét a szerző készítette.

Csíksomlyó is a well-known Catholic Marian shrine in Romania in Székelyföld, where people have been making pilgrimages persistently and in large numbers for generations. After the dictatorship, the traditional farewell procession went through significant changes from 1990: its appeal is extensive, it is visited by hundreds of thousands of people, it has now become a media event and a destination for religious tourism. Even without official church recognition, it is considered a national shrine. In the second part following the conceptual introduction, the book briefly summarizes the first centuries of the life of the shrine. The topic of the third part is the forty-year dictatorship. In ten chapters, the fourth and fifth parts discuss the revival of the farewell procession after 1990 and the changes in the shrine, from the leaders to the objects, from the spatial structure to the media. The summary chapter is followed by appendices compiled from source texts, personal name and geographical name indexes. The text is illustrated with 267 well-detailed, mostly color photographs, the vast majority of which were taken by the author.

A jelen kötetben ismét arra teszek kísérletet, hogy bemutassam, E. S. Piccolomini eredetileg latin nyelven írt, ezért csak egy szűk elit számára elérhető, nyíltan erotikus novellája hogyan hódította meg a különböző európai nyelveket beszélő népeket. Vizsgálatom fő iránya a most újonnan feltárt hat fordítás esetében is technikai jellegű nyomozás: jóval a 19. századi copyright elterjedése előtt milyen latin forrásokból dolgoztak az egyes francia, olasz, angol és magyar fordítók a 16. és a 18. század vége között? Forráshasználatuk hogyan tükrözi a korabeli Európa könyvpiacának kínálatát? Kérdéseim másik csoportja arra vonatkozik, mekkora szabadságot engedtek meg maguknak az egyes fordítók: mely klasszikus utalásokat hagyták ki az eredeti szöveg sűrű intertextuális hálójából, miként tabusították a testiséget, hogyan használták fel az Ótestamentum, Vergilius, Dante, Boccaccio és Piccolomini nyomán az európai irodalom híres szerelmeseit, hogy Eurialus és Lucretia történetén keresztül oktassanak a hódításra, intsenek a szerelem veszélyei ellen, szórakoztassanak a bohózatba illő fordulatokkal, vagy éppen ostorozzák a házasságtörés bűnét?

In this monograph I continue to describe the European reception of E. S. Piccolomini’s erotic Latin love story, which originally was available only to closed circles of elite readers. The central methodology of my work, yet again, is thorough pilological investigation, attempting to discover the possible Latin source text of six translations of Historia. My main questions are as follows: much before 19th-century copyright laws what kind of Latin source texts were used by the different French, Italian, English and Hungarian translators of the love story? How did their use of sources reflect on bookmarkets of contemporary Europe? The other set of my questions asks about the freedom of each translator: which classical references did they omit from the dense intertextual net of Piccolomini’s original? How did they handle its eroticism? How did they manage Piccolomini’s references to famous lovers of the Old Testament, Virgil, Dante and Boccaccio in order to instruct their readers to conquer a lover, to warn against the dangers of love, to entertain with farsical scenes or to condemn adultery?
