Abstract Jözef Kowalewski and his contribution to the study of Mongolia’s historical and cultural heritage and the Mongols: a review of historiography and archival funds. The article deals with the scientific heritage of a specialist in Mongolian Studies Jözef Kowalewski (1801-1878), who is rightly considered a founder of a scientific school of Mongolian Studies in Russia, and Europe in general. The diverse and rich heritage of J. Kowalewski attracts the attention of more and more scientists, the number of publications is increasing, both in Russia and abroad — in Poland and Mongolia, revealing his multifaceted activity not only as a philologist, but as a historian and ethnographer. The analysis of scientific literature, as well as the collections of archives containing the manuscript heritage of the scientist shows the need for further study of his works, which are not yet accessible to a wide range of researchers; since they have the richest information on the history, language, and culture of Mongolian peoples, and materials reflecting the main milestones in development of Mongolian Studies.
