ABSTRACTS ——o— MÁRIA HERNÁDI Boxes opened, boxes closed Spaces, times, characters and languages in the drama Children and Soldiers by János Pilinszky The work of János Pilinszky as a playwright is inspired by the distinctive directions of his thinking. Concerning dramas, the most important of them is the guest to restore presence and the ideal of evangelical aesthetics. In my presentation, I will analyse the play Gyerekek és katonák [Children and Soldiers], which is the closest to the traditional form of drama, whereas it reflects almost all of the author’s literary and theatrical pursuits. The way Pilinszky thinks, and, as a result, his lyrical, epic and dramatic oeuvre too, can be characterized by his creating closed systems to which he generates his own, hermetic system of signs and references. He creates his dramas from this kind of interlocking ‘boxes’, and this characteristic box structure is the most complex and richly layered in meaning in his play “Children and Soldiers”. In my presentation, I attempt to explore this layering through the analysis of the use of space and time, characters and language. ZSUZSA HORVATH Janos Pilinszky, theatrical critic This study makes an attempts to review, systematize, and group Janos Pilinszky’s critiques, criticisms of theatrical performances in Hungary. I will turn to the peculiarities of the theatrical concept that can be deduced from them, and then I will compare it with Pilinszky’s own and the possible theatrical ideas of the era, with the way of thinking about theater. Pilinszky’s work in this field is a less researched and explored area of the author’s concept of theater. This study may in part contribute to a better understanding of Pilinszky’s early theatrical activity and to developing a more complete concept. + 235 +
