ANNA JUDIT TÓTH So we should choose either of two hypotheses: a) At a certain point in the development of Dionysiac mysteries, some elements of the Mithraist religion infiltrated the theology of the other cult. As the present volume proves, there are signs of similar tendencies in other cults." b) It is conceivable that the idea in our text is a concoction of Neoplatonic philosophers and other thinkers of the fourth and fifth centuries. If this latter possibility is true, Lydus’ text still remains a document of Late Antique religion, but it is independent from any actual cult practice. However, we cannot expect to find satisfactory answers to these questions unless we find new sources.
