THE HEBREW LANGUAGE AND COMPARATIVE LINGUISTICS IN THE EARLY CENTURIES OF HUNGARIAN PROTESTANTISM ——o— JÓZSEF ZSENGELLÉR INTRODUCTION A renowned historian of Hungarian comparative philology, Jozsef Hegedtis (1926-2014), stated that “the interest of Hebrew-Hungarian comparative linguistics reflects the main tenor of the linguistic literature of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: the companionless of Hungarian, its total dissimilarity, and its special and original features compared to the Indo-European languages." Another contemporary Hungarian linguist, László Honti, in his "Myths of the origin of the Hungarian language", also refers to writers who worked on the relationship between Hebrew and Hungarian.?
