ACKNOWLEDGMENTS —o> — It is a pleasure to reach the point where I can express my gratitude to the numerous individuals and organizations that have contributed to this dissertation. First of all, I would like to express my deep gratitude to Ägnes Bolonyai. Ägnes has been a great inspiration for me for her determined and humble attitude to her profession. I could never thank her enough for what I have learned from her as a researcher and as a mentor. I would also like to thank my supervisor, Anna Fenyvesi, for her insightful comments and constructive criticism. She has taught me crucial ways to analyze issues investigating interactions between language and society. I am also grateful for the Hungarian Fulbright Commisission for granting me a great opportunity to spend an academic year in the USA as a postgraduate researcher. I would also like to express my gratitude to the subjects of my research for sharing with me the most personal accounts of their lives spent in immigration.
