A LÓTUSZ LELKE THE SOUL OF THE LOTUS. ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NEW RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS, LIFE REFORMS AND FINE ART Keyworps lifeform, theosophy, fine art, iconography ABSTRACT At the turn of the century art life interacted closely with the various life reform and new religion movements that were unfolding, At the same time, new scientific or technical discoveries have a major impact on both the life reform movements and the various branches of the arts. The Czech Frantiiek Kupka (1871-1957) spent most of his life in Paris, was already early in his career involved in spiritualism, one of the first reform communities, where he became a vegetarian and took sunbaths. His symbolist work is strongly influenced by the doctrines of theosophy, his philosophical readings and the exhibitions of oriental artefacts in museums in Paris. The study uses two of his graphical works to explore the interweaving of the New Religious Movements and the visual arts in the period. 43
