Chapter 1. Foundation which are shared with neighbouring countries, are also adversely affected. Furthermore, the long-term impacts are unknown but are undoubtedly severe and irreversible.* In the case of armed conflicts, the question of how to establish a formalised system of responsibility and sanctions for post-war justice is a key issue. It is essential to note that the regimes of international legal responsibility and the international legal sanctions, although interrelated, are distinct phenomena.” Furthermore, in the context of environmental damage, it should be noted that, in my view, restoration to the original state is, by definition, impossible and that compensation, to an appropriate degree, is the only option. The end of the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine is unpredictable, and even after a possible peace, the time needed to restore nature is incalculable. However, early peace in Ukraine would prevent further environmental damage and further deterioration of European ecological systems. “Then I said, “For how long, Lord?” And he answered: “Until the cities lie ruined and without inhabitant, until the houses are left deserted and the fields ruined and ravaged,™' I also believe that environmental lawyers are necessary to “test the waters” for new concepts and liability regimes to fight ecological destruction and establish enforceable legislation to prosecute those who harm the environment the most. The current trends proved that, meanwhile, adverse environmental changes are widely recognised by scientists, activists, and members of the international community, and political changes are greatly influencing globalised efforts to fight climate change and other environmental problems. The strict regime of states’ responsibility for internationally wrongful acts resulted in a situation where grave environmental destruction remains unpunished. Also, the applicability of international law in cases involving multinational corporations is even more limited, so the great polluters are still conducting environmentally destructive practices. Climate litigation provided examples of environmentalism, but we are still at the dawn of such procedures, and I think the actual effect of these proceedings is yet to be seen.
